Portraits 5 – 6 / 29: Haylee & Naomi

Posted on: Thursday, March 26, 2015

After my visit with Allison & Joey, I met up with one of my cousins, his wife, and their two daughters, Haylee and Naomi at the Arboretum in Seattle. It was late afternoon–approaching early evening. The light at that later hour was magical–golden and soft; filtering sidelong and dappled through the Arboretum’s varied trees…

When Haylee was four, she was a flower girl in my wedding. She was an adventurous four year old–not scared to walk down the aisle. These days, Haylee is in elementary school, likes running (like me!), and from what I can tell, is still up for a good adventure.

Naomi is the one who is four now. She is a little firecracker–full of energy and spunk. She is a blur! It was hard to get Naomi to sit still (or even stand still) long enough for me to take her picture, but it was a whole lot of fun chasing her around the park trying.

And it was a treat to watch the two sisters together. There is a lot of affection there. They have a rapport–the are goofy together; they make each other smile, giggle and laugh. They tell secrets. They understand each other.

When I needed Naomi to slow down, Haylee was able to grab her little sister’s attention and hold it long enough for me to get in a few photos. Haylee also looks out for Naomi–during our afternoon in the park, she gave her advice and helped her navigate the rocks and trees we were traversing. Naomi is not timid though. She wants to keep up with her big sister (or even speed ahead on her own).

I had a great time exploring the Arboretum with my two little first cousins (once removed) and catching up with their parents. Here are some favorites from those last hours of daylight on the last day of February:

Also, a small plug: Haylee & Naomi’s mom is an amazing hairstylist and makeup artist. She has generously done hair and makeup for many cousin weddings (including my own). Check her out here.

To My Husband on his 30th Birthday

Posted on: Thursday, March 19, 2015

Today Christian turns 30. When I first met him, he was 19. This means I’ve known Christian (and we’ve been together) for the entirity of his twenties. And they were pretty great. So in honor of this very significant event, I give you 30 photos of Christian from the last year of his twenties:

C, thank you for this last year and for the 9 and half years before that. I’ve loved sharing my twenties with you and I can’t wait to see what our thirties bring (but I’m glad you’re going first!). You are a wonderful husband and my very best friend. Happy 30th Birthday! I love you so much.

ps: also, thank you for (mostly) indulging me when I ask to take your picture. xo.

Portraits 2 – 4 / 29: Allison, Joey & Baby Jane

Posted on: Wednesday, March 18, 2015

I took these photos of Allison, Joey, and six-week-old Jane at their house in Seattle on the last day of February. We spent the morning catching up and the early afternoon wandering through the house and backyard taking portraits. My visit ended with a long walk around the neighborhood and a late lunch of sushi takeout. It felt too short (but visiting old friends always does).

My friendship with Allison goes back almost 15 years. The short version of how I met Allison and Joey is this: we went to high school together. Joey was in my french class. Allison and I played on the freshman soccer team together. Our freshman year, Allison and Joey attended winter Tolo together. They didn’t start dating until well after college but thanks to that fateful jungle themed dance, there exists a photo of Allison and Joey as tiny 14-year-olds, dressed in semi-formal wear, embracing in front of a scene of lush green paper palm trees (and those of us who knew them then have wallet sized copies).

The long version of my friendship with Allison is not suited for a portrait blog post (it’s too long!). Let it suffice to say that she has been one of my best friends since high school. My greatest adventures, funniest stories, and fondest memories from ages 14 to 18 almost all involve Allison. Her home was like a second home to me (and her family felt like a second family). In the last decade, we haven’t lived in the same city for more than a few months but I still feel exceptionally close to her. I’ve always been able to depend on Allison and I feel very grateful to call her my friend.

Allison and Joey as a couple make me happy. They work together. They are both smart, spontaneous, funny, generous, perceptive, caring, fun and a thousand other good things. It was great to see them as parents–the way Jane looks at them melts my heart. Jane napped off and on during my visit and was incredibly easy going and sweet. I am looking forward to watching this little one grow up. And I hope I get to live in the same city as her (and her parents) soon. Fingers crossed!

Here are some of my favorites from my February visit with Allison, Joey and baby Jane:
